纤维素（cellulose)是β-1,4连接的D-葡聚糖，可含有不同数量的葡萄糖单位，几百到上万不等，棉花次生壁纤维素分子中有15000个葡萄糖残基。纤维素分子以伸展形式存在。大约30-100个纤维素分子平行排列组成微纤丝。平行排列的纤维素链之间和链内均有大量的氢键，纤维素的这种排列方式使之具有晶体性质，有高度的稳定性和抗化学降解的能力。
