律师协会是社会团体法人，是律师的自律性组织。全国设立中华全国律师协会;省、自治区、直辖市设立地方律师协会,设区的市根据需要可以设立地方律师协会。律师必须加入所在地的地方律师协会。加入地方律师协会的律师，同时是中华全国律师协会的会员。按照律师协会章程的规定,律师协会会员享有章程赋予的权利,履行章程规定的义务。律师协会按照章程对律师给予奖励或者处分。
他们都可以成为律师，都可以加入律师协会(Bar Association)。美国的法官一般从律师中产生，他们在担任法官期间仍可保留律师资格，只是不能从事律师业务而已。
