鲤亚科鲤属的一种。为长体型，比野鲤背高、体宽，但比常见的杂交鲤体长。由于建鲤体型健美，含肉量高，肉质鲜美，深受消费者的欢迎，将成为鲤鱼市场的当家品种。建鲤是以特定的荷包红鲤和沅江鲤为亲本，采用家鱼选育、系间杂交及染色体组工程（雌核发育）等综合育种的新工艺，经六代定向选育育成的良种。具有生长速度快、适合多种养殖方式饲养、抗病力强、易起捕、含肉量多、肉质好，以及能自繁自育，不需杂交制种，可降低成本、节约劳力，便于推广等优点。据各地养殖的情况反映，建鲤的生长速度比其它杂交鲤快30～40%，只要适时繁殖、养好乌仔、抓紧分塘、强化培育（大规格更花鱼种）、提早放养，当年即可养成食用鱼。
