建筑工程保险是财产保险的一种。由中国人民保险公司于1980年正式开办，主要承保对外工程。承保对象为各类工业、民用以及公共事业的土木建筑项目。承保范围包括： (1) 某些自然灾害如洪水、雷电、风暴等引起的损失；(2) 某些人为原因，如盗窃、工人技术人员的过失、恶意行为等引起的损失；(3) 某些不可预料的突然事故等。开办建筑工程保险的目的主要在于保证工程的各相关单位或个人在工程计划实施期间所遭受的经济损失能及时、合理地获得补偿，使工程计划得以持续顺利地进行。
