平均预期寿命亦称“平均寿命”。同一时期出生的人预期能继续生存的平均年数。假设有10万人同时出生，把这10万人从1岁开始，逐年存活下来的人年数相加，除以10万，得出这批人出生时的平均预期寿命。以此数值来推算这一代人的平均预期寿命。
例如，受教育少于8年的65岁女性，平均预期寿命为82岁。
