巨型框架体系是由柱距较大的立体桁架柱及桁架梁构成，即通常说所说的巨型柱和巨型梁，立体桁架柱是有四片桁架形成的立体构件，一般布置在建筑平面的周边，桁架梁通常为立体桁架，一般十层或十五层设一道，在两层空间桁架之间设置次框架结构，以承担空间桁架层之间的楼面荷载，并将这些楼面荷载通过次框架的柱子传递给桁架梁及立体桁架柱。
