川楝落叶乔木，生于平坝或丘陵地带湿润处，有栽培。分布于河南、甘肃、湖南、广西、四川、贵州、云南等地。冬季果实成熟时采收，除去杂质，干燥。采其熟后的果实晒干，叫川楝子、金铃子或川楝实，内含川楝素(toosendanin, C30H38O11)、生物碱、山柰醇、树脂及鞣质。味苦性寒，有小毒，有泻火、止痛、杀虫作用，主治胃痛、虫积腹痛、疝痛、痛经等。木材用途同楝，用树皮和根皮的二层皮有杀虫作用，可治蛔虫病。
