宽带智能网，是研究在以atm为基础的宽带网络上利用智能网技术如何开发各种多媒体业务。宽带智能网不是简单地将多种业务集成，它的目的是要实现一个可编程的业务平台，实现业务的灵活加载、扩展和新业务的增加。与以往的业务提供方式不同，宽带智能网能够在一个平台上提供多种业务（宽带智能网能支持的业务如表1所示），实现不同业务之间的资源共用，这样可以有效地降低多媒体业务的运营成本，使用户更容易接受；宽带智能网使得业务的扩展更加灵活，这样能适应不断增长和变化的客户化需求。
