相传自三国吴将吕蒙屯兵筑城于此而得名。位于桐城市东部，与庐江县、枞阳县接壤。全镇区域面积167.22平方公里，辖24个村，2个居委会，人口9.1万人，是桐城市的东部重镇、经济强镇和人口第一大镇。1999年列为安徽省省级中心镇，荣获省社会治安模范乡镇、安庆市文明乡镇、安庆市发展乡镇企业十强乡镇、安庆市小康乡镇。2006年省政府批准为省级历史文化名镇。
