失语症是指与语言功能有关的脑组织的病变，如脑卒中，脑外伤、脑肿瘤、脑部炎症等，造成患者对人类进行交际符号系统的理解和表达能力的损害，尤其是语音、词汇、语法等成分、语言结构和语言的内容与意义的理解和表达障碍，以及作为语言基础的语言认知过程的减退和功能的损害。失语症不包括由于意识障碍和普通的智力减退造成的语言症状，也不包括听觉、视觉、书写、发音等感觉和运动器官损害引起的语言、阅读和书写障碍。
