大理冰期是我国第四纪的一个冰期。对我国第四纪冰期的研究始于我国杰出的地质学家李四光。他在1921年即已在山西大同及河北太行山东麓发现了冰川漂砾，识别出冰川流动形成的擦痕。30年代，他又在江西庐山发现冰川沉积物，在鄱阳湖边发现具冰川擦痕的羊背石；并在安徽黄山发现U形谷削壁上的擦痕，在该山后海发现具擦痕的漂砾。
