外侧膝状体:位于间脑上,是外侧膝状体系丘脑的组成部分。外侧膝状体位于丘脑后部,在丘脑枕的外下方,为视觉的皮质下中枢。外侧膝状体借四叠体的上臂和上丘连接。其外侧连于视束,内侧连于上丘臂,深面的细胞团是视觉传导路的第三级神经元。其体细胞发出纤维组成视辐射,经内囊后脚止于距状沟上、下的视区。
