浅黄至浅棕色（纯品为无色，市售商品一般均有色）透明油状液体。无臭或微臭。味微苦。遇光易起变化而着色。呈中性。不溶于水。与乙醇、苯等有机溶剂混溶。 沸点180℃<133.3Pa)。相对密度 1.055，折射率1.50，闪点171℃（开杯）。不溶于水，可溶于二氯二氟甲烷等大多数有机溶剂中。大鼠急性口服LD5011500mg/kg，兔急性经皮LD501880mg/kg，无致癌性。由黄樟素经催化加氢还原后，与甲醛和盐酸进行氯甲基化，再同丁氧乙氧乙醇进行醚化反应制得。
