地磁脉动是一种短周期的地磁扰动， 周期一般为0.2~1000s,振幅为0.01~ 10nT。研究地磁脉动可以推测地壳上部的电导率状况，从而解决某些地质或地球物理问题。除此之外还有年变化、日变化。一年当中，不同季节∆Z不同，冬季与夏季差士10nT左右，一天当中，中午Z较少，早、晚相对较大，但两者差值很小。
