地球同步卫星是指在地球同步轨道上自西向东运行的人造卫星。它的轨道周期与地球的自转周期相同，为1个恒星日，即23小时56分4秒 ；距离地面大约35,786 km，距离地心大约 42,164km。地球同步卫星常用于通信、气象、导航以及军事情报搜集等。
从地球上看来它是静止的，因此它可连续不断的观测到地球 的某一部分，这种卫星称为地球同步卫星（geosynchronous satellites） 或地球静止卫星（geostationary satellites）。
