生活于土壤中呈菌丝状的单细胞或多细胞的异养性微生物。在土壤中的数量仅次予细菌。种类繁多，主要有藻菌纲、子囊菌纲、担子菌纲、半知菌纲。最适于通气良好的酸性土壤中生存，表土层分布最多，营腐生、寄生或共生生活，可分解糖类、淀粉、纤维素、木质紊、单宁等有机物、参与腐殖质的形成和分解、进行氨化作用和硝化作用，尤在酸性森林土壤中的有机质转化中起重要作用。
