1948年召开的第九届国际计量大会作出了决定，要求国际计量委员会创立一种简单而科学的、供所有米制公约组织成员国均能使用的实用单位制。1954年第十届国际计量大会决定采用米(m)、千克(kg)、秒(s)、安培(A)、开尔文(K)和坎德拉(cd)作为基本单位。1960年第十一届国际计量大会决定将以这六个单位为基本单位的实用计量单位制命名为“国际单位制”，并规定其符号为“SI”。以后1974年的第十四届国际计量大会又决定增加将物质的量的单位摩尔(mol)作为基本单位。因此，目前国际单位制共有七个基本单位。
