固体潮是指在日、月引潮力的作用下，固体地球产生的周期性形变的现象。用精密仪器可以观测到地球的固体表层也有和海洋潮汐相似的周期性升降现象，陆地表面的升降幅度因此可达7～15cm。当存在固体潮时，某一观测点的铅垂线方向和地面的倾斜会发生相应变化，但变幅不大，仅有千分之几秒角度。固体潮的存在说明固体地球具有一定的弹性，固体潮就是弹性地球在日月引力作用下发生的弹性变形。此外，由于地震波也是一种弹性波，地球能够传播地震波也从另一个侧面证实了地球是有弹性的。
