亭是供游人避风雨、避晒、休憩和观景的园林建筑。《园冶》谓：“亭者，停也。”而“停”之含义尤其丰富，能停之处必有得景丰富、引人入胜的特点，其常常可以注目、动心、驻足、休憩、得趣、赏心、灵活、以少胜多、饶有余音。亭在造型上通常有屋盖并向四周开敞，其内部是半透空间，有一定的护蔽和安全感。《园冶》指出：“宜亭斯亭。”可见要因境安亭，即亭须与自然环境相协调和适应。
