四氯化碳是一种无色液体，能溶解脂肪、油漆等多种物质，易挥发、不易燃的液体。具氯仿的微甜气味。分子量153.84，在常温常压下密度1.595g/cm³(20/4℃)，沸点76.8℃，蒸气压15.26kPa(25℃)，蒸气密度5.3g/L。四氯化碳与水互不相溶，在五百度以上时可以与水作用，产生有毒光气和盐酸，可与乙醇、乙醚、氯仿及石油醚等混溶。遇火或炽热物可分解为二氧化碳、氯化氢、光气和氯气等。
