四姓通常指中国历史上某一时期非常有名望的四大望族，由于姓氏不同，而称为“四姓”。同时某些四种不同阶级，不同等次的划分方法也成为“四姓”。如南北朝以郡望或官位分为甲、乙、丙、丁四等，谓之四姓。又如印度社会的四种阶级（婆罗门、刹帝利、吠奢、首陀罗）又称四种姓、四姓种或四品人。四姓全国人数4430人，北京人数10人，主要分布安徽、云南，起源不详。
