商品期货交易是以商品为标的物的期货交易。分为农产品期货、金属期货、化工产品期货和林产品期货。现代意义的商品期货从农产品期货开始，时间是19世纪中叶; 交易地点在美国芝加哥。到1987年，世界上进行期货交易的商品共有35种，其中农产品20种，金属产品9种，化工产品5种，林产品1种。商品期货的出现，极大减轻了广大生产经营者的风险，有助于市场价格的稳定，对商品交易的发展起到了极大的推动作用。作为期货交易发源地的美国芝加哥，现依然保持农产品交易中心地位，金属期货交易则主要集中于伦敦金属交易所内进行; 石油及其制品的期货交易则主要集中于纽约的商业交易所内。
