在工程计中，常要求了解系统受到冲击载荷作用后的最大响应值，即振动的位移或加速度的最大值。由于作用时间短暂，计算最大响应值时通常忽略系统的阻尼，使计算结果更偏于安全。最大响应值与激励的某个参数（例如激励作用时间）的关系曲线即称作响应谱（response spectrum）。
