在特殊意义上，是指O．H．Warburg的呼吸酶。O．H．Warburg测定了一氧化碳对呼吸的抑制由光照射而又恢复的作用光谱，指出与氧直接反应的酶是血红蛋白。并将之称为呼吸酶。以后，又称为氧传递酶。相当于细胞色素氧化酶。细菌进行有氧呼吸时，必须通过呼吸链传递电子和氢离子以产生ATP。而呼吸链就是由琥珀酸脱氢酶、NADH2脱氢酶、细胞色素氧化酶等组成。这些酶都分布在膜上。
