吸收截面是吸收过程的概率的量度，指入射粒子被靶核吸收的概率，为总截面与散射截面之差。具体解释就是一种运动中的粒子（或粒子系统）碰撞另一种静止粒子（或粒子系统）时，如果在单位时间内通过垂直于运动方向单位面积上的运动粒子数为一，静止粒子数也为一，则单位时间发生碰撞并合并为新核的几率称为吸收截面。
