所谓“后硫化”,即是当制品硫化完成取出以后,由于橡胶导热性差,传热时间长,制品因散热而降温也就较慢,所以它还可以继续进行硫化,特将它称为“后硫化”。“后硫化”导致的抗张强度和硬度进一步增加,弹性和其它机械性能降低,制品的使用寿命因之受到损害。所以,制品越厚就越应将“后硫化”考虑进去。在一般情况下,可以根据抗张强度最高值略前的时间或以强伸积(抗张强度与伸长率的乘积)最高值的硫化时间定为正硫化时间。
