后土，又称後土。源于母系社会自然崇拜中的土地与女性崇拜。全称承天效法厚德光大后土皇地祇，是道教尊神“四御/六御”中的第四位天帝，她掌阴阳，育万物，因此被称为大地之母。 相传她是最早的地上之王。后与主持天界的玉皇大帝相配合，为主宰大地山川的的女性神。
起到稳定作用的自然植被不断减少，随后土壤受风雨的侵蚀加速，就成为了沙漠化的主要成因。
