石墨晶体具有由碳元素组成的六角网平面层状结构。层平面上的碳原子以强有力的共价键结合,而层与层间以范德华力结合,结合非常弱,而且层间距离较大。因此,在适当的条件下,酸、碱金属、盐类等多种化学物质可插入石墨层间,并与碳原子结合形成新的化学相——石墨层间化合物(Graphite Intercalation on Compounds,简称 GIC)。这种层间化合物在加热到适当温度时,可瞬间迅速分解,产生大量气体,使石墨沿轴方向膨胀成蠕虫状的新物质,即膨胀石墨。这种未膨胀的石墨层间化合物就是可膨胀石墨。
