白细胞、血管内皮细胞或其它细胞表面的粘附分子可以被内吞进入细胞，也可以脱落下来，进入血液。进入血液的粘附分子就成为可溶性粘附分子（soluble adhesion molecules，sAM）。此外，某些粘附分子的mRNA存在着不同的剪接形式，其中有的mRNA翻译后的产物可能不表达在细胞表面，而是直接分泌进入血液，成为可溶性粘附分子的另一个重要来源。
