发光材料是指能够以某种方式吸收能量，将其转化成光辐射（非平衡辐射）的物质材料。物质内部以某种方式吸收能量，将其转化成光辐射(非平衡辐射)的过程称为发光。 在实际应用中，将受外界激发而发光的固体称为发光材料。它们可以粉末、单晶、薄膜或非晶体等形态使用，主要组分是稀土金属的化合物和半导体材料，与有色金属关系很密切。
