地质学研究早期划分的年代地层单位。是当时已知最古老时代形成的地层。 18世纪，在对南阿尔卑斯和意大利平原的地层研究中，把地层自下至上划分为原始系、第二系、第三系。十九世纪初在对巴黎盆地的研究中，又在原第三系上部划出第四系。 随着地质学的发展，原始系、第二系的名词已经废弃不用，相应的地层细分为很多系。而第三系、第四系的名称保留下来。
