即时消息（Instant Messaging,IM），又称即时通信，是指可以在线时实交流的工具，也就是通常所说的在线聊天工具。广义的来说，即时消息包括网络聊天室、网络会议系统等与所有联机的通信；狭义的来说，即时消息是指由一组IM服务器控制下的通信。即时消息早在1996年就开始流行，当时最著名的及时通信工具为ICQ，最初由三个以色列人开发，1998年被美国在线收购。
