南戏，是中国北宋末至元末明初，即12～14世纪200年间，在中国南方地区最早兴起的汉族戏曲剧种，是中国戏剧最早的成熟形式之一。 南戏有多种异名，南方称之为“戏文”，又有温州杂剧、永嘉杂剧、鹘伶声嗽、南曲戏文等名称，明清间亦称为“传奇”（即“明清传奇”）。 就其音乐──南曲来说，则是一种重要的汉族戏曲声腔系统，为其后的许多声腔剧种，如海盐腔、余姚腔、昆山腔、弋阳腔的兴起和发展的基础，为明清以来多种地方戏的繁荣，提供了丰富的营养，在中国戏曲艺术发展史上，具有重要意义。
