透膜是一种只让某些分子和离子扩散进出的薄膜，一般来说，半透膜只允许离子和小分子物质通过，而生物大分子物质不能自由通过半透膜，原因是半透膜的孔隙的大小比离子和小分子大，但比生物大分子例如蛋白质、淀粉等小，如羊皮纸、玻璃纸等都属于半透膜。
