中国史学发展到宋朝，一共编著了正史17部。称之为十七史。因此宋朝文天祥曾告诉元代丞相博罗：“一部17史，从何说起！我今日非应博学宏词科，何暇泛论！”。
其主旨是突出《十七史商榷》考据成就，同时也体现了乾嘉时代的“求实”精神。
