唐朝及五代时称太原为北都 （1）. 武则天在位时 天授元年（公元690年）因并州是其故里而建为北都；唐中宗神龙元年（公元705年）罢。唐玄宗开元十一年（公元723年）又因并州是唐高祖李渊的发祥地，复升为太原府，建北都。天宝元年（公元742年）改称北京，上元二年（公元761年）停京号；次年又称北都。
