中国最早的戏曲声腔之一。为金、元时期流行于北方的杂剧与散曲所用的音乐。源于唐宋大曲、诸宫调、宋词、鼓子词、唱赚、转踏以及北方各民族音乐，而影响最为直接和深刻的首推诸宫调，因之形成了戏曲音乐中曲牌联套体的结构体制。这种音乐之所以称为曲，是与宋词相区别。词与曲都是利用词牌与曲牌填词歌唱，但在形式上曲突破了词的定格，不分上、下阕；在句数、字数上也打破了词的限制，可以大量使用衬字，显得生动活泼，故谓“曲者，词之变” 。称为北曲，又是为了与南宋以来流行于南方的南曲相区别 。
