北周（557年—581年）是中国历史上南北朝的北朝之一，又称后周（唐宋以后鲜用），宇文周。由西魏权臣宇文泰奠定国基，由其子宇文觉在其侄子宇文护的拥立下正式建立。历五帝，共二十四年。 西魏恭帝三年（556年），实际掌握西魏政权的宇文泰死后，第三子宇文觉正式即位称天王，自称周公。次年初，他废西魏恭帝自立，国号周，建都于长安（今西安汉长安城遗址），史称北周。 北周孝闵帝宇文觉年幼，大权掌握在堂兄宇文护手中。九月，宇文护杀孝闵帝，立宇文毓为帝。武成二年（560年），宇文护又毒死宇文毓，立宇文邕为帝，史称北周武帝。 建德元年（572年），周武帝宇文邕智诛权臣宇文护，亲掌朝政，进行了多方面的改革。 577年，北周灭北齐，统一北方。581年，杨坚受禅代周称帝，改国号为隋，北周亡。
