励磁就是向发电机或者同步电动机定子提供定子电源，为发电机等（利用电磁感应原理工作的电气设备）提供工作磁场的机器。有时向发电机转子提供转子电源的装置也叫励磁。 其根据直流电机励磁方式的不同，可分为他励磁，并励磁，串励磁，复励磁等方式，直流电机的转动过程中，励磁就是控制定子的电压使其产生的磁场变化，改变直流电机的转速，改变励磁同样起到改变转速的作用。
