动力煤指用于作为动力原料的煤炭。一般狭义上就是指用于火力发电的煤。从广义上来讲，凡是以发电、机车推进、锅炉燃烧等为目的，产生动力而使用的煤炭都属于动力用煤，简称动力煤。 动力煤的热值和挥发分、灰分的要求不像化工煤（如炼钢用的焦煤）那么高。但从动力工艺的经济效益考虑，动力用煤也应有一定的质量要求。
