列车自动控制系统是在列车自动停车基础上发展起来的装置，使列车按地面送来的允许行车速度信息行驶的技术和设备。。它设在机车上，大部分情况下，是装有专用程序的微型计算机及其相应的接口。装有列车自动控制系统的列车，连续不断地从地面获得允许行车的速度信息，将它与列车实时采集的车速相比较，在超出规定允许的车速时，控制系统根据列车的制动能力、实际载重和前方区间坡道弯道条件等多种因素，求得最佳降速方案进行降速，或在需要时进行制动，以保证行车安全。
