从语言形态学(linguistic morphology) 的角度来看，语言有分析型(analytic) 和综合型(synthetic)之分。分析型语言的主要特征是语序较固定，而综合型语言的主要特征是语序灵活。分析型语言有：汉语、泰语、越南语等 汉语是分析型语言，语序总体上较为固定，没有屈折变化，其词语组合成句依靠语序和虚词；英语是综合型为主，向分析型过渡的语言，语序既有相对固定的一面又有灵活变化的一面。因此，在语序上具有某种程度的共性，这是我们进行英汉语序对比的基础。
