分子运动论（又称气体动理论或分子动理论）是描述气体为大量做永不停息的随机运动的粒子（原子或分子，物理学上一般不加区分，都称作分子）。快速运动的分子不断地碰撞其他分子或容器的壁。分子动理论就是通过分子组分和运动来解释气体的宏观性质，如压强、温度、体积等。分子动理论认为，压强不是如牛顿猜想的那样，来自分子之间的静态排斥，而是来自以不同速度做热运动的分子之间的碰撞。
