简言之就是对水的净化。水的净化，是通过相应的过滤材料，根据不同的最终用水需求，以物理或化学的方式，去除水中的铁锈、泥沙、余氯、有机物、有害的重金属离子、细菌、病毒等的过程。显而易见，如果水净化全程运用的是物理过滤方式，则不会在水中产生或添加任何新的物质，更不会改变水的性状，因而是最安全的方式，目前在西方国家广泛采用。水得到净化，去除了危害人体健康的物质，我们称之为“净水”。
例如，有命名如”注射无菌水“（Sterile Water for Injection）、“净化水”（Purified Water）和各种等级的无菌水。
