盆地介于钓鱼岛隆褶带和琉球隆褶区之间,北端从日本天草盆地开始,向西南延伸至台湾岛,与钓鱼岛隆褶带平行,呈NNE—NE—NEE向弧形展布。中间窄南北宽,面积约97510平方千米。中新世以来沉积厚度推测有10 000~12 000 m,盆地基底为变质的石炭系、二叠系。莫霍面深度为15~28 km,是一个晚第三纪的弧后裂谷盆地。
