居住在农村或集镇，从事农业生产，以农业收入为主要生活来源的人口。农业人口包括从事农业以外的活动，但参加乡村集体经济分配的人口，如乡镇企业工人，民办教师等，不包括乡镇管理机构中由国家发给工资、供给商品粮的干部和国有农业企业的干部。 1978年中国大陆实行改革开放以后，大量从农村迁徙到城市，这类人群迁入城市以前为“农业人口”（农民）身份，各个时期对其称呼也不同，有民工、农民工等之称，不管其在所居城市、集镇生活多久，在其户口未入籍所在城市以前，均作为农业人口统计。
