光信号经过光纤传输到达接收端后，在接收端有一个接收光信号的元件。但是由于我们对光的认识还没有达到对电的认识的程度，所以我们并不能通过对光信号的直接还原而获得原来的信号。在他们之间还存在着一个将光信号转变成电信号，然后再由电子线路进行放大的过程，最后再还原成原来的信号。这一接收转换元件称作光检测器，或者光电检测器，简称检测器，又叫光电检波器或者光电二极管。
