光学纤维（optical fiber）是指用于传导光的人造纤维。又称光导纤维，简称光纤。基本结构是圆柱形的细长丝，直径在1—100微米之间。制造光纤的材料最常用的是二氧化硅（石英），也有用多组分玻璃或有机玻璃等。光纤的材料都要高度透明，对材料的纯度要求非常高，如通信用的光纤其材料纯度有的要求达到8个9以上。如果材料的纯度低，光在传输过程中的衰减就会很快。光纤的制造过程是将材料放在高温炉中熔化，经高速拉制成细丝。拉制工艺要求拉出的丝粗细均匀，符合光学要求。使用的光纤有两种类型：一种是反射型光纤，利用光的全反射使光沿折射路径在光纤内传播；另一种是折射型光纤，利用折射率逐渐变化使光沿曲线路径在光纤内传播。
