光呼吸（Photorespiration）是所有进行光合作用的细胞在光照和高氧低二氧化碳情况下发生的一个生化过程。它是光合作用一个损耗能量的副反应。绿色植物在照光条件下的呼吸作用。特点是呼吸基质在被分解转化过程中虽也放出CO2，但不能转换成能量ATP，而使光合产物被白白地耗费掉。在黑暗条件下，呼吸过程能不断转换形成ATP，并把自由能释放出来，以供根系的吸收功能、有机物质的合成与运转功能以及各种物质代谢反应等等功能的需要，从而促进生命活动的顺利进行。所以光呼吸越强，光合生产率相对就低。根据大气氧浓度21%时的测定，茶树叶片的光呼吸强度为1.6±0.1mgCO2/dm2/h，比一般植物高。
