元古宙是一个重要成矿期,主要矿产有铁、金、铀、锰、铜、硼、磷、菱镁矿等。元古宙同位素年龄从25—6或(5.7)亿年,共经历19亿年的悠久时间。元古宙划分为3个代。25—18亿年为古元古代,18—10亿年为中元古代,10—6或(5.7)亿年为新元古代。其中新元古代的后半段,即8—6或(5.7)亿年单划分称震旦纪。元古宙的地史具有下述特征。
